Tips for Choosing a Good Child Care Program

7/26/2017

A good child care program ensures a positive and perfect overall development of your child. The child develops a lot of habits during his tender age. Choosing a good program requires enough time and patience which is worth it as a child care program forms a foundation for your child’s adult life. Here are a few things to consider while selecting a good child care program for your little one.

  • Ratio of teacher to child: You need to check the ratio of teacher to child. Ideally one teacher should take care of a few children as she can give personal attention to your child. If the child is small, he needs more attention and care at the childcare facility. A ratio of 1:4 is good for babies, while a ratio of 1:10 is good for children above four years of age.
  • Group of children: Know the number of children in the group. It is always better if the group is smaller. A group of 2 teachers and 10 children is always better than a group of 5 teachers and 25 children, though the ratio is still the same for both groups. Smaller group is safer and calmer as compared to larger group.
  • Qualification of the caregiver: Find out the educational qualification of the caregiver in the facility. A degree holder or the one who is trained especially for working with children is always better as she knows about the needs of your child and her responsibilities towards your child better than the one who is not professionally trained for the job. Moreover, make sure that the teachers are constantly involved with some kind of activities for their personal skill improvement. Also they should attend workshops regularly so that they are upgraded with the latest skills in childcare field.
  • Turnover: Ask for how long the teacher has been with the childcare center. A child is more comfortable with the same teacher as she spends longer time with your child, at least a year. Caregivers or teachers who often leave their job cannot build a strong relation with your child. Your child will have a hard time in the facility with new teachers. It becomes difficult for the child to adjust with new ones every now and then. So make sure that the teachers have longer turnover in the childcare facility you choose.
  • Certification and license: Choose a child care center that is accredited by a National Organization. A licensed child care facility fulfills the mandatory standards set by the organization.

Besides these, you need to check the health and safety standards of the childcare facility. Check if the facility is clean and maintains proper hygiene as it is the matter of your child’s health. Also, the teachers should follow the hygienic standards and also inculcate this habit in children. Cleanliness and hygiene are the two important aspects you should check before enrolling your child with the child care program.

My daughter is finally at the age where she can go to child care, and we were curious about how we would find the right place. I love that you say to know the number of kids in the group. It would be nice to make sure that your child is going to get the amount of care they need in the end.

I agree that you should know how large the groups are in the child care center. You want to make sure the group is smaller, so they get more attention. It's good to know that the right thing to look for is a group of 10 children and 2 teachers.

It is interesting that you say to choose a child care center that has a good teacher-to-child ratio and that a 1 to four ratio is good for small children. My daughter will be going to childcare soon because I am returning to work full-time next month and it would be great to have a good teacher-to-child ratio so that my daughter will get the individualized attention that she needs. Also, I will make sure to chose a center that has accredited and licensed because this will give me peace of mind that they are a certified and qualified center.

My sister will be going back to work and she wants to send her child to a daycare center in the morning. It was suggested here that when choosing a daycare center, she should ask for the certification and license of the professionals. Furthermore, it's recommended to hire go to have her child enrolled in a trusted daycare center.

I never knew that there was actually suggested ratios for children in childcare. I thought that it was more about making sure that you didn't see like 30:1 as the ratio. It is good to know this so that when I am looking for a child care program for my children that they are getting the correct ratio.

I'm glad that you mention how it's important to know how many children are in the group so that you can ensure they have the right amount of teachers to keep the kids calm and safe. Going online could provide you with information on their child care services as well as their phone number so you can call to set up a visit. Visiting the child care center in person would be a great opportunity to meet the teachers so you can ask questions and see how they interact with the kids in order to figure out what program would be best.

You've got great tips for choosing a daycare center. I love how you said that it's good to find a place with a qualified caregiver. If he or she is going to be watching our small son for hours at a time, I want them to be responsible and professional, like you said.

I thought it was smart of you to mention that a childcare facility needs to have a proper ratio of children to teachers. My wife and are going to be working and going to school full time, but we have a child that we need to take care of at the same time. If we could find a childcare facility that specializes in taking care of toddlers, then we would not feel as worried about our child while we are at work and school.

My niece is ready to go to school and her mom wants to make sure that she is equipped. It was explained here that when looking at childcare programs, she should check the ratio of children to teachers to see if they are able to give personal attention to her child. Furthermore, it's recommended to consult experts when in need of childcare services.

I like what you said about paying attention to the ratio of teachers to children in your perspective childcare programs. My wife and I recently had our first child, and my wife has been itching to get back to work. We'll be sure to look for childcare facilities that have good teacher to child ratios so that we can ensure that our kid gets the best care possible.

It's helpful that you said a ratio of 1:4 is good for babies because I have two of my own. I want to find somewhere safe to let them stay while my husband and I are at work. I'd feel a lot more comfortable if I knew that they had plenty of staff to take care of them.

Ah, it's good to know that a teacher:child ratio of 1:10 is good once the children are 4 or older. I'm actually looking for a child daycare center for my kids. I don't need to drop them off there every day, just the days I'm working late.

I liked that you pointed out that it would be smart for me to consider how many kids will be at the childcare center. My sister needs to find a daycare for my nephew this fall. She wants there to be a pretty small child to teacher ratio. That way, he will get the attention and care that he needs. But it might be smart for her to make sure that there are a good amount of kids his own age there as well so he can make friends.

I love what you said about how it is important to know the educational qualifications of the child care workers in child care. We will look for people who have some kind of a degree in this field. I am starting back to work in the spring and I want to be prepared with good child care for my 3 year old son. Finding a good place for him is most important.
