Should You Be Concerned if Your Child is Not Sleeping Well at Child Care?

8/3/2017

Choosing the best child care is an important decision as a child care program is almost like a second home for your child. Kids often spend most of their time at their child care facility, hence it is a prime duty of every parent to look for one that not just helps him in his overall growth and development, but also feels like his second home. A place where a child waits to get in on the next day is what makes a great child care facility. Since the child spends his first half of the day at the facility, (in most cases) it is likely for your child to take some rest after the lunch break. However these small kids feel sad as they are separated from their parents for long hours when they are at work. But once they get used to the new environment and start interacting with other children and caregivers at the facility, they start feeling comfortable. Usually once they feel safe, they start adopting their routine as the follow at home, like taking nap at childcare when it is their time to. The feeling of insecurity decreases and they sleep soundly for some time without their parents at the facility.

However, the main issue is should you be concerned if your child is not sleeping well at childcare.  There are some reasons that you should really get concerned:
  1. Anxiety or fear: The new environment might not be comfortable for your child to adjust. Usually, the children have a sense of fear in a place they are unfamiliar with. They do not feel calm and hence this disturbs their sleep pattern. The fear of new people around and unknown kids does not allow them to sleep well.
  2. Away from parents: The most common cause of the child not getting sound sleep at the child care facility is the pain of separation. During the initial days in a child care facility, the child is unable to bear the separation from his parents. He feels lost and lonely and often searches around for them but with new set-up and unfamiliar faces around, he is unable to sleep properly.
  3. No place like home: Home is the most comfortable place in the world, no matter how big or small it is. Every person feels most comfortable at his home irrespective of his age, same holds true for kids and toddlers. The new place may not give a feeling like home, hence the sleep issues.
  4. Health problem: Most of the kids also do not sleep well as they might be suffering from a health problem like cough, cold, fever etc. Hence, make sure that the child is perfectly fit when he is left at the childcare facility.

Though most of the problems related to disturbed sleep may get solved as time passes by, but if the child is still not comfortable or highly reluctant to go to the center, just check if there is something else that is bothering him, may be the caregivers are too strict or unfriendly with your child. You should take things carefully while leaving your child at the child care facility.
