After School Programs in Albany

6/10/2017

Albany has many schools and after school programs dotted across the Capital Region. But what do we do with our children when the school day is finished at 2:30 in the afternoon. This is a huge chunk of the day and your children have not yet used even half of their learning capacities. It’s a whole new world of opportunities for them and good after school programs will just be what they need. There is a list of such establishments in the area and we are helping you to explore them.

1. Sidney Albert Albany JCC
The many activities that happen at this center after school make you wish you are a child again. Sidney Albert Albany JCC runs a program dubbed Kaleidoscope that will engage your child for the whole afternoon. Their designated transportation will drop your child off at the center where they are placed in rooms according to grade. Snacks are served and they enjoy games with their friends. What’s more, you and your child can chose any of the specialty classes to engage in. Whether it be swimming, cooking, art, community service, or music, they will find lots of pleasurable moments. If he or she is inclined to sporting activities, or is a lover of languages, there are programs that are designed for them. Best of all, children have the opportunity to complete their homework under supervised guidance.

Here is a typical day in Kaleidoscope:
  • At 2:35, children arrive at the center.
  • By 3:00pm, the first specialty class begins.
  • At 4:00pm, the second specialty class begins.
  • At 5:00pm, children are free to play in their rooms until they are picked up by parents.

2. Albany Public Schools Extended-Day Programs
If you prefer, your child could join one of the extended day programs run by the City School District of Albany schools. While young children are cared for in designated programs, curriculums are also effected for elementary and middle school children who can get involved in a whole range of activities after school. Children get the chance to improve in their academics and complete homework in designated times. It’s not all work however, as the programs involve outdoor play, games, participating in a variety of clubs and arts and crafts. Importantly, the schools extended day programs also incorporate programs that develop the character of young ones. A typical after school schedule at Albany Public Schools Extended-Day runs from the time school dismisses to approximately 5:30pm.

3. Kids Express Learning Center
Here is a unique afterschool environmental program developed and executed by the Kids Express Learning Center. Although offered only to children enrolled in their day school program, the program is designed to let kids explore the natural environment. Children learn to care for animals by interacting with those on Kids Express farm. The program also provides the opportunity for them to engage in gardening from the planning and planting stages to the actual harvesting of crops. The daily schedule is from 3:30pm – 5:30pm.

4. New York State Museum
After school care can exist in places you least expect. In addition, your child may find interest in more unconventional places, especially those who are more independent and free-spirited. The New York State Museum, for example, establishes a museum club that engages children between 8 and 13 years in a variety of activities. The museum provides an informal but inviting environment that allows children to explore the area and express themselves freely through interaction. Museum programs and activities are carried out in fun and interactive ways that:
  • Allow hands-on interaction with the exhibits and resources.
  • Assist with homework and give academic support.
  • Help in the development of team skills and appreciation for others.
  • Help with career development.
  • Help with college preparation.
  • Allow children to continue to learn while they help others.
  • Improve their communication skills.
Numerous children have taken advantage of the programs which are generally free.

There is so much more that children can benefit from during a school day. Let your kids join one of the great after school programs that are available in Albany.

If you are considering a great after school program for your children, also consider TSL Adventures. We might be a bit biased but are very confident your children will have a great experience. Our focus is to provide a safe, creative and fun environment that will help to grow your child's physical, social and cognitive skills.
