A Puppy For Christmas? Read This First

If a puppy is on your child’s Christmas list this year, don't bring home the first cute face you see. When adding a four-legged member to your household, there are several things to consider.

According to petMD, you should choose the family dog based on three major factors:
  • Temperament. This is the dog’s personality. Make sure to look for an agreeable temperament. A calmer dog has the ability to form strong bonds and be a great companion for kids.
  • Energy level. This is a matter of preference. Be realistic about the lifestyle you can provide to a dog that needs more exercise than average. If you can’t meet a dog’s needs, his or her excess energy can lead to behavioral problems.
  • Size. This should be examined in relation to temperament and energy level.  For example, some larger dogs tend to be calmer, while some smaller dogs can be excitable.

Among the questions to ask qualified personnel at places such as the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society in Menands, Homeward Bound Dog Rescue in Schenectady or one of the many Albany-area pet stores are: How safe is the dog for all family members? How much care will this dog need? Will the dog be compatible with the existing family pets?

Now that you’ve considered the above questions, here is the list of the best dogs for kids and families, with a short description, courtesy of petMD:

  1. Golden Retriever. Confident, smart, kind, loyal, extremely patient.
  2. Labrador Retriever. Playful, patient, loving, protective, reliable, highly intelligent (they take well to training).
  3. Poodle: Very smart, gentle, great for people with allergies (they shed very little).
  4. Irish Setter. Playful, energetic, love being around people, play well with children.
  5. Vizsla. Energetic (need regular exercise), gentle, loyal, affectionate, obedient, confident, smart, sensitive, gentle.
  6. Newfoundland. Very intelligent, protective of children, gentle, kind, sweet, patient, great swimmers (can save lives in emergency situations).
  7. Collie. Gentle, easily trainable, love to please their owners and protect their family.

Remember: Puppies can look cute, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be perfect at home. No matter which dog you choose for your family, remember to give him or her a heavy dose of TLC.
